This book is a full color field guide designed to aid in the identification of wild plants that are both edible and medicinal. Included in the book are descriptions of the plants, their habitats, look-alike plants, and edible and medicinal uses. Also included are the parts of the plants that are useful, and any other noteworthy uses the plants may have. In this book, you will find over 400 full color photographs of different parts of the plants, and the plants during different seasons, designed to help you positively identify each plant.

I had this book in my "save for later" cart for a long time. When the price finally dropped I nabbed it.

The photos are remarkable, and pretty clearly show what each plant looks like. There are 23 pages of initial pictures classified by the color of the flower, so you can identify the plant more quickly. Then come the 96 pages of descriptions of plants, and the uses of their individual parts.

My biggest gripe is the Cautions and Warnings that do NOT show the look a like plant.

For example, the Wild Carrot (aka Queen Anne's Lace) has a warning stating it's similarity to Hemlock. Hemlock, as the book points out, is perhaps the most poisonous plant in the US. But there is NO information on distinguishing Queen Anne's Lace from Hemlock. Not even one photo! There's information on using the Wild Carrot's leaves, roots, etc. But most people never will because they'll be worried about grabbing Hemlock instead, or worse, some people will think they've got Wild Carrot because of these photos, but instead have picked Hemlock.

I suppose the caveat is don't pick anything with a warning…?

City Sidewalk Salad Superweeds that are both edible and medicinal Cynthia Briere 9781439253441 Books Reviews

I saw this in manuscript form, and I must say, I was enthused and amused from the outset. Ms. Briere has captured a segment of the natural world that has not, to my knowledge, been explored. Her book is thorough, informative, light-hearted and easy on the eyes as well as the brain. If you live in an urban environment, or even close to one, buy this book and become more fully informed about all that stuff that grows everywhere, and then, of course, go make a salad with what you find.
The book itself is good. It would have been nice if it were more expansive, but overall learning what plants are edible could keep you alive. One thing I am extremely disppointed with was the fact that after I opened the book a few times (3 or 4) the entire binding system failed and all the pages just came loose. This is very disappointing and I am not sure what recourse I have. I would think that a better binding system should be used. maybe I just have a crappie book.
Bought this book and received it quickly, but when I opened the book it fell apart, the binding just gave way. some of the printing was blurry and unreadable.
The pictures where great the info in the book was great.
I did return the book for a new one due to the printing error, when I received the new one same thing bad binding but the printing was better.
